I've had similar experiences in the mid-1980's. I recall a blazing hot day in downtown Calgary, Alberta watching the westbound 'Canadian' pass through the wash racks before heading out onto the mainline on its journey to Vancouver and points west. The engineer tossed down an ice cold can of CP Rail water as he was passing by. Tasted gross but boy was it SO cold!
Had crews toss me cans of water on a couple of other occasions on blistering hot days. I recall walking from Keith Yard (MP9.6 Laggan Subdivision) to Bearspaw (MP14) and back in 30C temps as a teenager in summer 1985. I was dying of thirst when a passing crewmember on an eastbound train tossed me an ice cold can of water. I lucked out on the trip back when a signal maintainer on a speeder gave me a ride.
