It is dark inside the boxcar so I decided to put in some lights.

We are going to need some lights, some conduit, a breaker, an outlet, a GFCI, a power inlet, and wire.

Power inlets are expensive so I decided to steal... I mean repurpose one from the passenger car.

I originally hung the lights with 4lbs rated magnets but once I learned the car was going to be moved I decided to update to bigger 35lbs magnets and affix them to the light fixture itself. I saw two screws that I thought would be a perfect place to mount the magnets.

Turns out those screws are used to hold in the grounds. Try to make sure to reconnect them to the magnets I used to hang the lights and then check with a multimeter because unlike the writers of Star Trek Picard I do care about continuity.

My original plan was to set up a 12 volt lead acid battery and have it charge through a solar cell, then use an inverter to power the lights. But for complications and cost reasons I got a 2-stroke generator. Underneath it attached to a beam. But that would require drilling and cutting through steel and I finally realized since a box car door is going to be open when we're using it this is unnecessary and I could just mount the power inlet inside.

Nice work. This makes me want a boxcar to turn into a little tiny home.

Me again. Tell me if you may, OP: what's the process for even just acquiring a boxcar like this? Or rather, any freight car?

For example I love gondola cars. I don't know why but they're my favourite car ever since model railroads got me into trains as a kid. If I wanted to own one just to own one - maybe I could use it for storage and stuff, or slowly turn into a little "house" - are there special things you need to do beforehand?

Or is it just as easy as finding a used rolling stock dealer selling one, buying it, paying to get the thing moved, making my local authorities happy regarding safety/environmental checks/whatever and then plopping it down on my property to enjoy?

If you're not storing it on active rail and its presence isn't violating any local laws, you could definitely have any type of rail car you wanted on your property.

Getting it to you is the biggest challenge, however. You can probably find gondolas for sale right now. Paying to have a single car shipped to you can be a bit of a hassle because you're the exact kind of customer that most railroads don't want. They want volume, e.g. a rock plant getting 75 cars a day or some shit like that.

Get it shipped to someone else's track nearby and then pay to get it trucked the last bit.

It's still going to cost more for the shipping than they car, most likely.

As an example tidbit, when Age of Steam acquired their AT&N 2-10-0, they paid roughly $10,000 for the locomotive. Having it trucked from where it was to an active rail siding (approximately 4 miles away) to be loaded onto a flatcar and delivered by rail cost approximately $90,000.
